About the Artist – Toa Sekiguchi (関口 東亜)

Tōa Sekiguchi, born 1942, hails from Shibukawa City in Gunma Prefecture and continues the creative-kokeshi legacy of his family. Known for his softly rounded, harmonious forms and subtle, expressive painting, Sekiguchi’s dolls often feature gentle curves, serene faces (sometimes with closed eyes), and delicate motifs such as floral or natural elements — frequently executed in a restrained palette of blacks, greys, vermilion and gold. His work has been recognised with some of Japan’s highest honours: among others, the Prime Minister's Award and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry Award — testaments to his skill in blending traditional craftsmanship with a refined modern aesthetic.
