Sourcing Story

We came across the “Shō” plates during one of our visits to Kuramae — a district we often pass through on the way to different makers and workshops across Tokyo. It’s the kind of place where small studios open suddenly onto the street, and you never quite know what you’ll find until you step inside. Tucked in a quiet corner was a shop carrying pieces from regional kilns. That’s where these crystalline plates from Tōetsu-gama were displayed — their black glaze catching the light in soft, mineral-like blooms. Each plate felt calm, atmospheric, quietly extraordinary. It wasn’t a planned find, just one of those gentle discoveries you make while moving between places — a reminder that Japan’s craft has a way of revealing itself exactly when you’re not looking for it.
